Agni Yoga Series: Helena Roerich on Abortion 1933-1934

The ability to discern the real state of things and to see the true colors of people is the basic requirement to enter the Path. ~Helena Roerich

The value of human life in the womb is not, as noted before, a new concept or one embraced only by those of Christian or Orthodox religions.  Before Elizabeth Clare Prophet's teachings on abortion in the late 1900's, were those of Helena Roerich, wife of Nicholas Roerich*, (now the Ascended Master Nicholas Roerich), and the amanuensis for the Master Morya.

Below, are a few teachings on the topic of abortion that can be found in the Agni Yoga Series. Considering that they are just a decade shy of being a century old, if you did not know the date of their publication, you might think you were reading something from a contemporary spiritual or esoteric organization.

Letters of Helena Roerich I

Letters I, 19 June 1933

And now let us turn to the subject of abortion. To deal with this problem now is quite timely. There appear currently the most disgusting articles about it and some of them are written with the approval of the clergy. On this subject I shall quote some paragraphs from the Teaching:

“The spirit is connected with the embryo at the moment of conception. It begins to enter in the beginning of the fourth month when the first nerve and brain channels are being formed. The formation of the vertebral column brings in the next degree of possession of the body. Wonderful is the moment of birth, when the consciousness of the spirit flashes up brightly and then blends with matter. There are even cases when words are pronounced at birth. The final possession of the body takes place at the seventh year of a child’s life.” It is also said, “Even as hunger directs toward food, so the spirit is directed toward incarnation, as only matter can give the new impulses.”

Therefore, it is not hard to imagine how much suffering the spirit that is ready to incarnate endures from the forced interruption of life already begun, or from the averting of an incarnation even planned by karma. What a difficult karma the ignorant and criminal parents prepare for themselves!

Letters 1, 17 April 1934

3. You mentioned a most painful problem of today’s life—the question of the legality of abortion. Of course, there are no two opinions on this subject: abortion is most definitely murder. Therefore, only in cases where the mother’s life is in danger should it take place. But it is wrong to think that a woman who is guilty of abortion always attracts low spirits. The karma of the whole family should be taken into consideration. Often we can notice that in a family where one of the children is worthless the other children are not bad. Karma ties groups of people for long, long thousands of years. And often, even a high spirit has not unimpeachable, irreproachable parents. And it is significant that the dark forces are especially against the reincarnation of highly developed spirits, and they try their best to prevent the reincarnations that are dangerous for them. And, once more, it is not the purgatory of the Subtle World that prevents spirits from reincarnating, but only the crime of the parents. There is not a more powerful purgatory than the earthly life, if all the potentialities of the individuality are intensified. It is said in the Teaching, “As the one who hungers longs for food, even so, the spirit that is ready to incarnate longs for the new incarnation.” Therefore, one can imagine what suffering the spirit undergoes by reason of artificial prevention. The spirit is connected with the embryo at the moment of conception, and gradually enters the body in the fourth month when the nerve and brain channels are being formed. Therefore, abortion is permissible only in exceptional cases.

7. Certainly, I approve of the fight against abortion, but how will you fight this evil? There are no laws which can either preserve or forbid anything. That is why I, personally, think that first of all you must battle by uplifting the level of consciousness of the growing generations, directing it toward the right comprehension of the human cosmic mission in general and that of motherhood in particular. Thoughts should be directed toward creative work and broad problems of the General Good on a cosmic scale. It is important to establish the world’s scale. Again, we return to the same fundamental question: upbringing and education. As the Great Mind expressed it, “The source of all suffering is ignorance,” which is so true; and the history of humanity, with all its dark pages of persecution of the best representatives of knowledge, proves it.

A New Heaven and a New Earth: America Must Return to Her Divine Commitment to Uphold the Life of the Child Aborning in the Womb of the Divine Mother

That the Christ Might Be Born

   “If the spiritual leadership of America does not cry halt to this massacre and this holocaust, then, I tell you, you may count the number of July Fourths that will remain to be celebrated.”

~Saint Germain and Portia, July 4, 1990

     It’s been 33 years since I and many others heard these words, yet, here we are, in a new millennium, and the failure of the spiritual leadership in America to “cry halt” to the massacre of abortion is still heavy upon this nation.

     Thirty-three is a significant number—it is a mystical number; it is the number of initiations illustrated in the life of Jesus.

     Such is the testing that those who aspire to walk the path of Personal Christhood taught by the Ascended Masters of the Great White Brotherhood through their messengers Mark L. Prophet and Elizabeth Clare Prophet can expect.

     In their landmark Fourth of July dictation, Saint Germain and Portia spoke strongly of many things, including the “pain of the karma” of those who know the Law yet who fail to speak up on behalf of the unborn:

     “For I tell you, when the judgement descends upon this nation for this abortion of these children of the Light and these sons of God, and yes, avatars, none will be held guiltless who have failed to speak out on this issue, to write on it and to defend that position for Life!

     Therefore take the opportunity wherever it may be.  Better, beloved, to incur the wrath, the condemnation, the ridicule, the despite and even to endure being cast out of acceptable society than to be silent on the defense of Life.”

      There must be thousands of people who have either heard or read these words since 1990, yet many may have forgotten just how important the stopping of abortion is to the victory of America and to its very survival in the 21st century.

      If you were also there in 1990—or if you have read and studied the Masters’ words in the years that have followed—and are wondering how you might still help bring in “A New Heaven and a New Earth” in America in this century, consider reading any of the previous posts on abortion and getting together with your spiritual friends and leaders and co-workers of light and see just what you might be able to muster in response to the Masters’ requests for action on behalf of the unborn and the future of America.

A Must Read: "A White Paper on Abortion: Teachings of Elizabeth Clare Prophet and the Ascended Masters On The Sanctity of Life in the Womb"

         Today, the leading provider of telehealth abortions, Hey Jane, announced the launching of its services in Virginia, enabling more women to end the lives of their developing unborn children in the comfort of their homes. From April to December 2022, medication abortion via telehealth increased 136%.

           While undoubtedly, many Americans consider this a great victory for women's rights, the sheer number of medical abortions that now occur, including via telehealth (over 53%), is stunning.

          With an ever increasing number of abortions occurring in the privacy of homes, some may wonder what they can do that would still make a difference in saving the lives of the unborn.  Here are a few suggestions:

           Pray. Consider this simplest of prayers offered by Beloved Jesus Christ:

"Dear Jesus, save the children!  For they are my brothers, they are my sisters.  Save them and teach their parents not to abort them." (Pearls of Wisdom Vol. 37 No 45, November 6, 1994.)

           Study.  Become familiar with the various views of different religions on the legalization of abortion and with some of their teachings on abortion.  Many traditional churches, like the Roman Catholic church, are quite clear regarding the value of life in the womb.

            For a most succinct explanation of the teachings of the Ascended Masters on abortion, consider reading A White Paper On Abortion:  Teachings of Elizabeth Clare Prophet and the Ascended Masters On The Sanctity of Life in The Womb.*

             Be Prepared.  Take a few minutes to download free brochures and flyers or free eBooks that you can study and share with others---you never know who the angels might direct your way when they know you are able to help someone in need at any time.  Share them with friends and family and have them available in your study groups and spiritual centers for others to use.

   There are many lives yet to be saved and many people who need to be illumined.

Two Remedies for The Brokenhearted and Bereaved

        Sometimes, there really are no words to describe the grief people may suffer due to the loss of loved ones and friends, especially when the death is sudden and unexpected.  Even after a long-term illness, death, when it happens, can be an enormous shock to those left behind.

       In our family alone, we've lost two loved ones in the last 2 1/2 months--a much loved 95+ year old grandfather who was alert and basically healthy up to his last week of life and who tried to not be annoyed with God and the universe that it was "taking so long" for him to move on, get to heaven and see his beloved wife again; and a much loved son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin, who died unexpectedly 4 days before his 42nd birthday, from a health condition he kept mainly to himself. They are both in a better place, and we are all here with the empty places and spaces in our hearts and homes, seeing them "everywhere" we go.  It is, as all who have lost loved ones and friends know, very surreal, for a very long time.

     (If you or anyone you know are in need of resources for grief, please check out the post Words for the Elderly, the Sick and the Dying--Practical Resources.)

    For anyone who believes in an afterlife, I would like to share some advice I once received from a very wise and experienced psychologist, Dr. Marilyn C. Barrick, with whom I spoke in the early years after my husband died at the age of 36, leaving me with two children under the age of five.

   During one counseling session, Dr. Barrick told me two things that made a huge difference in my life and in my grief process.  First, she said that if I had any "unfinished business" with my late husband, I could say a prayer to Archangel Michael to take me to the retreats in heaven to meet him there and wrap things up, for as long as it took.  There was no limit to the number of times I could make such a request.  So, I did.  And, after about a year, things shifted, and I rarely had the need for such a prayer, but have, over the last 34 years, occasionally put it to good use.  The prayer was something like this, and can be said for anyone who has passed with whom you may need resolution.  You can say, "Holy Christ Self," or "Higher Self," or "Higher Power," or whatever works with your beliefs:

"In the name of my Holy Christ Self, I ask Archangel Michael to take me in my soul and soul consciousness to the retreats in heaven to meet with __________.  I ask Archangel Michael to guard and protect me and my soul to and from the retreats."

   The second thing she told me was, I believe, the most helpful practical spiritual tool I've heard of so far in my life:  She told me that I could, at any time, write the Higher Self of my husband and pour out my heart and tell him anything I wanted or needed to; ask Archangel Michael to take the letter to my husband's Higher Self, and that the angels and his Higher Self would make sure he got it (at a soul level).  This was the formula she shared with me, and I have used it many, many times over the last 3 decades, not just with my late husband, but with family members and friends who have also passed on:

    Sit comfortably at a desk or table and, on a clean sheet of white paper, begin your letter to your loved one by writing almost as you would any other letter:

     "Dear Higher Self of ______________,  according to God's Will: (Then pour your heart out)

_________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________.

     Love,

     ___________________"

     Then, you fold the letter up, ask Jesus, God, the angels, to fill up the void left in you (after you've poured your feelings into the physical letter) with his Light, with the Light of God, so that no more darkness or suffering enters you.

    Next, you say a short prayer to the angels asking them to take the letter to your loved one:

     "In the name of my own Holy Christ Self, I ask the Angels to take this letter from my heart to the heart of the Holy Christ Self of ___________."

    Then, you safely burn the letter in a pan, fireplace or on a sheet of aluminum foil--wherever you can safely consign the letter to the physical flame, so that it is burned and the angels carry it to the higher realms, the etheric/fire realm, where the Higher Self of your loved one is.

                                                               ~*~

    That's it.  I cannot describe how healing and liberating this ritual was and is for me and for others who are aware of this most practical spiritual tool.

                                                                              ~*~

~Thomas Moore, Irish poet, lyrics:
(Baylor A Capella Choir)

Come, ye disconsolate, where’er ye languish;
Come to the mercy-seat, fervently kneel;
Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish,
Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

Joy of the comfortless, light of the straying,
Hope of the penitent, fadeless and pure;
Here speaks the Comforter, tenderly saying—
Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot cure.

Here see the Bread of Life; see waters flowing
Forth from the throne of God, pure from above;
Come to the feast of love; come, ever knowing
Earth has no sorrow but heaven can remove.
